Everyone is saying that the professor is grinding the Pokémon into candy, but consider the following:

• The professor frantically running around with assistants, inspecting hundreds of thousands of pidgeys a day, getting bitten and screeched at while they try to figure out if this pidgey has been tagged yet so they release them back to track their migration

• Panicked interns trying to scoop the ekanses back into their tank because theyre freaking out the rattatas

• Three caterpies climbed into a vent and evolved into metapods that are too far in to reach so six underpaid college students are trying to dismantle ductwork

• Theres a big door marked “KEEP OUT” because a dozen oddish evolved into a squad of Vileplumes and until they stop releasing stun spores the entire room is just off limits

• Hundreds of researchers running on red bull and determination trying to tag and examine all the Pokemon but having to turn off the machine every once in a while to the discontent of trainers who are all getting a “Sorry, the servers are currently down” message at LEAST twice a day

• “GPS not found” flashes while returning a big group and suddenly Florida has been gifted 6,000 mankeys right in the middle of Epcot

• Someone in the back room up to their waist in stale dog treats with a bunch of little stamps. They sigh deeply at how gullible Pokemon trainers are that they think these things actually do anything other than excite the Pokemon so much they evolve

• Actual science professor surrounded by chaos and interns and a budget just too small

Pokedexes have always been biological survey equipment, and this? Right here? Is largely how actual biology surveys work- you catch and release LARGE numbers of the species you’re studying, as large as you can afford, sometimes keeping them in the lab for observation first.

Also if they were running on the average funding of a US university/public bio lab, this would explain… basically everything about the app.

It Also explains why the professor is like HERES SOME POKEBALLS CATCH EM HERES SOME TEAMS FOR FRIENDLY COMPETITION GOGOGO and then vanishes. If he’s running a whole survey on his own he’s probably running on sheer determination and sleeping on his office couch. 

If his office couch is even visible anymore.

That first image is an edit of HUGZzz by Irene Strychalski. She’s improved tremendously in the past nine years, and you can see her current work on her tumblr, reniedraws! As for the anime girl in the plaid skirt, I braved the hellscape that is early ‘00s anime websites, exploring endless gif-covered Gaia pages and vampire-filled roleplay forums, traveling across seas of unsourced DeviantArt edits and low-res hentai, to discover that she is an original character by Hiro Suzuhira. She has done work for Shuffle!, Ef: A Tale of Melodies, Akikan!, Phantom Breaker, and We Without Wings, among many others, and she is also a prolific freelance illustrator. Word of Caution for Parents and Adult Pokemon Go Players

My husband was grocery shopping today and witnessed this incident, and it made me concerned.

An adult man was walking around the store trying to catch Pokemon, and he saw a kid who was doing the same. As he had just caught a really good Pokemon in the parking lot, he asked the kid if he could show him where it was. The kid agreed, and followed this stranger out of the store.

The adult realized that he had essentially just lured a kid away from his parents in a public place, and immediately told the kid to go back inside to his parents.

This guy clearly had no bad intentions toward the kid, but how easily could someone have done the same thing intentionally in order to abduct or harm a child? After all, people have already used Pokemon Go to commit armed robbery.

So I want to warn both adult (over 18) Pokemon Go players and parents of children who play the game.

Parents: If possible, go with your children when they go out to play the game. If that isn’t possible, be sure to have a conversation with them about strangers, even strangers who are playing the same game. It might be appropriate to point out the real cases of crimes committed using Pokemon Go so the kid understands that the threat is real.

Adult Pokemon Go players: Remember that minors are still minors, even if you’re both playing the same game. Don’t ask minors to follow you or join you in hunting Pokemon. Don’t meet up with minors for Pokemon hunting without parental consent.

You may have no bad intentions, but that might not stop you from being accused of something you didn’t do or try to do. False accusations could ruin your life. Plus, you don’t want to encourage minors to trust adults just because they’re playing the same game, because the next adult might not have such good intentions.

I learned about the murder of Kitty Genovese in two separate psychology classes, at two separate universities. It was studied as an example of the “bystander effect”, which is a phenomenon that occurs when witnesses do not offer help to a victim when there are other people present.

I was told by my professors that Kitty Genovese was a 28-year-old unmarried woman who was attacked, raped, and brutally murdered on her way home from her shift as manager of a bar. I was told that numerous people witnessed the attack and her cries for help but didn’t do anything because they “assumed someone else would”. Nobody intervened until it was too late. 

What I was not told was that Kitty Genovese was a lesbian who lived more or less openly with her partner in the Upper West Side and managed a gay bar. 

Now… is it likely that people overheard Kitty’s cries for help and ignored them because they thought someone else would deal with it? Or, perhaps, did they ignore her because they knew she was a lesbian and just didn’t care?

Maybe that’s not the case. Maybe it was just a random attack. Maybe her neighbours didn’t know she was gay, or didn’t care.

But it’s a huge chunk of information to leave out about her in a supposedly scientific study of events, since her sexuality made her much more vulnerable to violent crimes than the average person. And it’s a dishonour to her memory.

RIP Kitty Genovese. Society may only remember you for how you died, but I will remember you for who who were.

Honestly, the Kitty Genovese case has been wildly misreported since the beginning, mostly by people who were trying to make  point and ignored the actual facts.

The common myth that “thirty-eight people heard what happened and did nothing” is false: one man shouted from his window to “leave that girl alone!” two people called the police, and one woman actually left her apartment to help; she was holding Genovese when emergency services finally arrived. However (and relevant to the OP’s point about how homophobia played a role in the case) one of the witnesses was a man named Karl Ross, a friend of Genovese’s. He saw what was happening, but hesitated to call the cops, first calling a friend, then fleeing his apartment, and then finally calling the police. Ross was also gay. In the 1960s- pre-Stonewall, but very much within the culture of police homophobia- why wouldn’t a gay man have hesitated to call for help? They were as likely to arrest him as come to Genovese’s aid. Even if they didn’t target Ross then and there, there was a significant risk of exposure that went along with contacting any kind of authorities.

Not only that, in he 1960s the police were consistently harrassing gay bars and they were as likely to harm Genovese further as come to her aid.  

There was actually a book recently released about this! I haven’t read it, so I can’t vouch for it, but if you want more information on this:

Gallo examines one of America’s most infamous true-crime stories: the 1964 rape and murder of Catherine “Kitty” Genovese in a middle-class neighborhood of Queens, New York. Front-page reports in the New York Times incorrectly identified thirty-eight indifferent witnesses to the crime, fueling fears of apathy and urban decay. Genovese’s life, including her lesbian relationship, also was obscured in media accounts of the crime. Fifty years later, the story of Kitty Genovese continues to circulate in popular culture. Although it is now widely known that there were far fewer actual witnesses to the crime than was reported in 1964, the moral of the story continues to be urban apathy. “No One Helped” traces the Genovese story’s development and resilience while challenging the myth it created.
